Max Holloway and Alexander Volkanovski tease a trilogy fight is in the works

Alexander Volkanovski and Max Holloway have hinted that their long-awaited trilogy fight may finally be on the horizon.

Over the course of the last few years we’ve seen two featherweights dominate the division above all others in the UFC – Max Holloway and Alexander Volkanovski. They’ve both been champion and they’ve both picked up big wins over other members of the top 15, but the defining rivalry for these warriors thus far has been the one they share with each other.

Back at UFC 245 in December 2019, Volkanovski shocked the world and beat Holloway via unanimous decision to capture the strap at 145 pounds. Then, just seven months later, they ran it back on Fight Island with ‘The Great’ just about retaining the championship thanks to a controversial split decision.

They were initially scheduled to battle it out once more at UFC 273 but an injury to ‘Blessed’ opened the door for The Korean Zombie to take his place.

Now, however, the following declarations have been made on Twitter to seemingly confirm that a fight is imminent between the two foes.

Dana White has already noted that the trilogy makes sense and with very few other contenders being out there to pursue Volkanovski, Max vs Alex 3 feels like the smart bet.

What’s happened since the rematch?

Alexander Volkanovski has been on a mission to prove himself to the masses ever since the split decision win in the rematch at UFC 251. He first went through a season of The Ultimate Fighter alongside Brian Ortega, before dismantling ‘T-City’ in an incredibly fun fight that saw the champ miraculously escape two very tough submission attempts.

Then, against Korean Zombie, Volkanovski made it look easy with a Performance of the Night success that put him in the P4P #1 conversation.

Holloway has more than earned another shot, too, by beating Calvin Kattar and Yair Rodriguez emphatically to cement his position as the true number one contender.

All that’s left is to see whether or not we can get a 100% definitive answer to the question we’ve all been asking: who is the best featherweight of this generation and, by default, perhaps the greatest featerweight of all time?
