West Ham's David Moyes sent off for losing his temper vs Eintracht Frankfurt

West Ham's Moyes is sent off.

David Moyes was sent off during West Ham United’s Europa League semi-final second leg against Eintracht Frankfurt on Thursday night.

The Hammers faced the toughest challenge of their European journey at the Deutsche Bank Park this week having suffered a 2-1 defeat on home soil in the first leg.

And the London club’s chances of reversing the deficit on the road looked to be slashed when Aaron Cresswell was sent packing for the second time in a Europa League knockout game.

With Rafael Santos Borré proceeding to open the scoring for the hosts just a few minutes later, it quickly became apparent that West Ham would need a miracle to reach the final.

And as frustrations grew and grew deeper into the game, Moyes was given marching orders of his own when he appeared to have an angry reaction to something on the touchline.

Moyes given his marching orders

The former Manchester United manager was seen kicking an object in anger with 15 minutes left on the clock, leaving the referee with no option other than to brandish a red card.

Moyes was clearly incensed with something as tensions spilt over on the touchline and that ultimately meant that he was no longer able to coach his Hammers team from the side of the pitch.

In truly remarkable scenes that are still yet to be completely understood, the full extent of the carnage that led up to and followed Moyes being sent down the tunnel can be seen down below:

It’s fair to say that emotions were running high in Germany.

Unconfirmed ball boy/girl reports

You can tell from the videos that Moyes was absolutely fuming with whatever had transpired by the benches, shouting and gesticulating in exactly the manner that tends to warrant a red card.

In fact, while hitherto unconfirmed, there are reports – including from BBC Sport – that Moyes’ outburst centred around a confrontation with a ball boy.

However, regardless of who or what Moyes was directing his frustrations at, it couldn’t have been any clearer that the Hammers boss was so incensed that he lost his composure.

And while it’s something that happens to pretty much every manager from time to time, there could be no denying that the Scot’s behaviour looked deserving of the punishment it received.

West Ham eliminated from Europe

In the end, West Ham were unable to recover from the early damage caused by Cresswell’s red card, creating a handful of chances but ultimately failing to bag themselves an away goal.

As such, the game ultimately petered out at 1-0 with Eintracht Frankfurt proving the side to book themselves a place in the final courtesy of a 3-1 aggregate triumph over the Premier League side.

And they will once again do battle with British opposition as they await Rangers – who defeated RB Leipzig in their semi-final clash – at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán Stadium on May 18. Game on.
