Rangers boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst has added Ross Stewart to his list of transfer targets and the Sunderland frontman will struggle to turn down a move to Ibrox, according to journalist Pete O'Rourke.

The Gers may still be celebrating after reaching the Europa League final by overcoming RB Leipzig on Thursday, but it appears van Bronckhorst is already putting plans in place ahead of the summer window.

What's the latest news involving Stewart?

Van Bronckhorst was appointed as Rangers' chief last November and, ahead of his first full season at the helm, it appears he wants to lure Stewart to Ibrox.

According to the Northern Echo, the Glasgow giants are in a race to sign Sunderland star Stewart when the transfer window reopens.

The report suggests Norwich City and Swansea City are also showing an interest in the 6 ft 2 Scotsman, while Black Cats boss Alex Neil has raised doubts that Stewart will look to force a move away from the Stadium of Light.

However, Sunderland are not necessarily in the strongest of negotiating positions as Stewart is set to enter the final 12 months of his contract in the summer, meaning Rangers could see the upcoming transfer window as the perfect opportunity to pounce.

Despite the uncertainty over the 25-year-old's long-term future, Stewart's former Ross County manager Stuart Kettlewell has claimed Rangers could still have to pay as much as £5million in order to get their man.

What has Pete O'Rourke said about Stewart?

O'Rourke understands Rangers are among Stewart's suitors ahead of the reopening of the transfer window.

The journalist also fancies the Gers' chances of being able to persuade the prolific goalscorer to head to Ibrox.

O'Rourke told GIVEMESPORT: "It looks like he's obviously on their wanted list, Ross Stewart. It's been talked about now for quite a few weeks that Rangers are keeping tabs on him.

"If Rangers do come calling, it's going to be hard for somebody like Ross Stewart - a Scottish player - to turn down their advances."

Will it be easy to sign Stewart from Sunderland?

Sunderland are currently competing in the League One play-offs, having finished fifth in the table, and sealing promotion to the Championship could make it more difficult for Rangers to pull off a deal.

Stewart scored 24 goals in 50 appearances during the regular season, taking his career tally up to 72, so there is no doubting that the Black Cats would like to keep him at the Stadium of Light.

But the lure of joining Rangers - the 55-time Scottish top flight title winners - and Champions League football if van Bronckhorst's charges win the Europa League could still be enough to persuade Stewart to make the move back to his homeland.
