Rangers ‘will probably’ prioritise keeping star striker Alfredo Morelos at the club beyond the current campaign, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

It’s set to be an extremely busy summer for the Glasgow giants, with several players either in the final few months of their contracts or approaching the last year.

What is the latest news involving Rangers?

Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s charges made history on Thursday when they defeated Bundesliga outfit RB Leipzig 3-2 on aggregate to advance to the Europa League final.

The Glasgow giants also have a Scottish Cup final against Hearts to look forward to, but things are slightly less certain and secure for them off the field.

Experienced quintet Allan McGregor, Connor Goldson, Steven Davis, Scott Arfield and Leon Balogun are set to become free agents when their existing deals expire at the start of June, although Rangers have the option to extend the latter by a further 12 months.

However, perhaps more concerning is that the contracts of Morelos, who earns £33,000-per-week, Ryan Kent, Joe Aribo, Ryan Jack and Filip Helander are all set to expire in the summer of 2023.

That means the club’s hierarchy will have to sell them when the market reopens for business if they refuse to put pen to paper on fresh terms or risk losing them for nothing later down the line.

What has O’Rourke said about Morelos?

Of the players whose futures remain uncertain at this moment in time, O’Rourke believes tying Morelos down to a new deal will be the ‘priority’ for Rangers.

He told GiveMeSport: “Morelos will probably be the priority because he's probably the one who's going to get you the biggest fee if he is to be sold right now. And if he was to sign a new contract, that would obviously enhance his price tag as well going forwards for Rangers.

“So, I think Morelos probably will be the priority if they were to keep anybody right now because he is the out and out goalscorer in that team for Rangers.”

How important is Morelos?

Morelos, who is valued at £11.7m by Transfermarkt, picked up a season-ending thigh injury in April, and Rangers’ success without him has shown they are far from a one-man team.

Nevertheless, the Colombia international has been sensational for the Gers since his arrival back in July 2017, registering 113 goals and 51 assists in 224 appearances across all competitions.

His goals fired Rangers to their first Scottish Premiership title in 10 years last term, and Van Bronckhorst would surely struggle to replace Morelos on a permanent basis.
