Aston Villa ‘looking for’ two players to fix Villa Park issue

Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard

Aston Villa ‘have to sign a centre-back’ in the upcoming transfer window following an underwhelming campaign, according to journalist Dean Jones.

Manager Steven Gerrard is expected to stamp his mark on the current first-team squad over the summer as he looks to guide his charges up the Premier League table next term.

What is the latest news involving Aston Villa?

Villa are currently lingering in the bottom half of the division after failing to live up to expectations this season.

Former boss Dean Smith was relieved of his duties back in November following a run of five consecutive defeats, meaning the Midlands outfit had lost seven of their opening 11 top-flight fixtures.

The departure of talisman Jack Grealish in a British-record £100 million deal to Manchester City was offset by the arrivals of Leon Bailey, Danny Ings and Emiliano Buendia, but the trio have struggled to settle.

That led to Gerrard bringing in Lucas Digne, Philippe Coutinho and Calum Chambers in January in an attempt to revive Villa’s floundering season.

However, they have remained an inconsistent entity under the tutelage of Gerrard, and he has already declared that he is prepared to bring players in to help him ‘fix’ Villa’s issues if the current crop can’t.

“At the moment, we are looking like a 45-minute team, and that is on me,” said the 41-year-old tactician. “I’ve got to fix it, and I will fix it. The players here have to help me now for the next eight games, and if not, we’ll get players who will help me fix it.”

What has Jones said about Villa?

Question marks have been raised over the performances of first-choice centre-back pairing Tyrone Mings and Ezri Konsa this season, and Jones believes Villa could sign up to two players in this position ahead of 2022/23.

He told GiveMeSport: “Obviously, Villa do have to sign a centre-back, at least one centre-back, probably two. And they’re looking for guys that have put in consistent performances all season.”

Who could Aston Villa sign?

According to The Athletic, Villa are ‘likely to be near the front of the queue’ for Liverpool’s Joe Gomez, who has struggled to receive regular first-team opportunities this season.

And Turkish media outlet Tum Spor have claimed that Villa are monitoring Victor Nelsson of Galatasaray closely ahead of a potential move.

It remains to be seen who Gerrard is able to convince to join his Villa Park project, yet it seems certain that at least one new centre-back will arrive his summer.
