Wolverhampton Wanderers starlet Chiquinho has set his sights on 'following in the footsteps' of Daniel Podence and Diogo Jota by breaking into the Portugal international side thanks to his form at Molineux, according to journalist Josh Holland.

Chiquinho made the move to the West Midlands after Wolves agreed to pay an initial fee of £3million to prise him away from Portuguese side Estoril during the January transfer window.

What's the latest news involving Chiquinho?

Wolves technical director Scott Sellars pleaded for supporters to be 'patient' as Chiquinho adapts to the rigours of the Premier League, but he also insisted the 22-year-old is an 'exciting and talented player'.

While Sellars hinted the winter arrival would not feature heavily before the end of the season, Bruno Lage - who was appointed as Wolves' head coach last summer - has not hesitated in handing the winger opportunities.

Chiquinho made an impact in an eight minute cameo appearance against Watford in March, with him chalking up his first goal contribution since swapping his homeland for Molineux.

Tim Spiers, The Athletic's Wolves correspondent, has already been impressed by Chiquinho and compared the Portuguese to Adama Traore while claiming he is a 'ridiculous talent'.

Although Chiquinho is far from being a first-team regular with his current employers, he has plenty of time to catch the eye of Lage as his contract is due to run until the summer of 2026.

What has Josh Holland said about Chiquinho?

Holland believes Chiquinho is eager to become one of the first names on the team-sheet and, as a result, break into the Portugal squad.

The journalist feels the success of fellow countrymen Jota - who is now on Liverpool's books - and Podence show it is possible for him to work his way into his nation's team while at Wolves.

Holland told GIVEMESPORT: "He's aspiring and going to want to show his worth to then follow in the footsteps of Diogo Jota and Daniel Podence by getting into that Portugal team.

"I don't blame Tim (Spiers) for being an admirer of him. I think when he came on against Arsenal, when they lost 1-0, he was just running at Arsenal.

"It's just something that Wolves miss when Traore is not there. It's whether he's got that final product that Traore obviously struggled with."

Why is Chiquinho looking up to Jota and Podence?

Jota may be at Liverpool after leaving Wolves in a £45million deal less than two years ago, but it was during his time at Molineux that he broke into the Portugal squad.

The attacker initially headed to the West Midlands on loan in 2017 and, since making his international debut two years later, he has gone on to win 24 caps.

Wolves forked out £16.6million to sign Podence in January 2020 and he went on to make his Portugal bow later that year.
