The tag team unification match was never planned to be part of the WrestleMania Backlash card, according to a new report.

On Sunday, Drew McIntyre will team with Raw Tag Team Champions RK-Bro to take on WWE Undisputed Universal Champion Roman Reigns and the SmackDown Tag Team champions The Usos.

WWE had originally announced that Raw champions RK-Bro would face off against SmackDown title holders The Usos in a Winner Takes All unification bout. However, the match was altered following Drew McIntyre’s altercation with The Tribal Chief on SmackDown last week.

According to Dave Meltzer on the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the six-man tag was always the planned bout, and the title unification match was never intended to go ahead.

The little bit we do know is that the six-man tag match was always the planned match. There was never a plan to do the unification match. So, while most feel this was the usual weekly plans changed, it was not. That also explains why last week nobody would confirm Reigns vs. McIntyre to me, only that Reigns would be in the main event. What we were told is that the decision was made to save Reigns vs. McIntyre for the bigger summer shows. The idea is with the smaller building and coming four weeks after WrestleMania, the interest level wasn’t going to be that high, and they need big matches for the bigger shows.

Roman Reigns recently clashed during WWE’s European Tour, main eventing the London show, and the pair are expected to main event shows across this summer and possibly the headline act for Clash At The Castle in Cardiff this September.

The advertised match change isn’t the first amend WWE have made to the WrestleMania Backlash event. Brock Lesnar had originally appeared on the promotional poster for the show, but reports suggest that WWE had no actual plans to have Lesnar wrestle at the Premium Live Show.
