7-time Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton has suggested he'd happily boycott the Miami Grand Prix this weekend and do something else over the ongoing jewellery row that seems to be strangely gathering pace at the moment.

Back at the Australian Grand Prix, we saw a reminder from the FIA that jewellery should not be worn by drivers during any session, on safety grounds.

That, of course, was soon put to Hamilton who has regularly driven with a nose and ear piercings throughout his career, whilst also regularly wearing other bits of jewellery outside of the car.

Indeed, he has said that he won't be removing his piercings at least - saying there are some he physically cannot take out - and the topic once again caught some of the headlines ahead of the Miami Grand Prix in the driver press conferences earlier this afternoon.

Decked in more jewellery than normal, and boasting three watches, Hamilton appeared to be making his standpoint very clear indeed, and he had this to say:

"As I said, I can’t remove at least two of the piercings. One I can’t really explain where it is. But it is platinum, so it’s not magnetic.

"It’s never been a safety issue in the past. I am willing to sign a waiver to take the responsibility away from the FIA if I need to. It is about individuality and being who you are.

"I did try to call [FIA president] Mohammed [Ben Sulayem] this morning. I sent him a message just to reassure him that I don’t want to fight with the FIA over this. This is very, very silly. I have not heard back yet, but I will try and speak to him before the race."

The Briton was also asked what he would do if the FIA decided that he could not race unless he removed the piercings, to which he said:

"If they stop me then so be it. We’ve got a spare driver, so we’re well-prepped for the weekend. There’s lots to do in the city anyway."

What an odd fiasco...
