Four-time Formula One champion Sebastian Vettel has publicly mocked new FIA regulations by wearing grey boxers over his racing uniform.

His latest walk through the paddock was as blunt as it could be and has gained social media attention, most particularly a footage of him with a beaming smile.

The German star seemed to laugh before giving a wave in a confused fashion towards the surrounding cameras.

The rules in place now mean that underwear will be checked rigorously by the scrutineers, with failure to comply with the rules possibly resulting in issued fines or even period penalties.

Unsurprisingly, the FIA’s decision to enforce these rules of underwear, and jewellery for that matter, stirred controversy within the world of Formula One racing.

Vettel spoke in a press conference stating that the topic was ‘unnecessary’ and even claimed that the new rule was designed to come down on Lewis Hamilton.

He said: “I think it is a bit unnecessary to blow this topic up. Probably at this stage it’s more of a personal thing, and I feel particularly in a way targeted to Lewis.

“We spoke about underpants as well, but really is that the most exciting thing we can talk about?”

British racer Hamilton threatened to not race and spend his weekend exploring Miami instead following his rejection of the idea.

He shares the same view of Vettel that the FIA should be focusing on more pressing issues and not shining a damning light on the sport.

Hamilton, in a stance against the rules, turned up to his press conference with two watches on one wrist and one on the other, whilst hosting lots more bling around his neck.

The seven-time champion was asked whether he agrees with Vettel that he is practically being singled out after the FIA attempt to repress the wearing of jewellery.

He said: “I couldn't get anymore jewellery on today. I don't really have a lot more to add than last time when I spoke about it. I feel like it's almost like a step backwards. If you think about the steps we are taking as a sport. All the more important issues and causes we need to be focussed on."

He added: “It's a small thing. I've been in the sport for 16 years… in the car I only have my earrings on and my nose ring, of which I can’t really remove."
