Liverpool will meet Real Madrid in the Champions League final on May 28, in Paris.

It's sure to be a monumental occasion, as two of Europe's most prestigious footballing powerhouses clash for the most coveted trophy of them all.

The two clubs have plenty of history between them on this stage. Most recently, Madrid got the better of Liverpool in the 2018 final in Kyiv, after a controversial incident and two disastrous goalkeeping errors helped the Spanish giants to a 3-1 win.

Travelling further back through the footballing history books, these two would meet in another European Cup final, with Paris hosting the occasion once again back in 1981.

The Reds got the better of Madrid on French soil, albeit by a narrow 1-0 margin and added a third European Cup to their collection.

But it's not just been in finals that this fixture has served up classics. In 2009, Steven Gerrard put in one of his most iconic performances ever under the Anfield lights, against Los Blancos.

Liverpool's captain, always the man for the big occasion, put in a commanding display in front of his home support and scored twice on route to victory - once from the penalty spot and another with a sumptuous half-volley from the edge of the area.

The ferocious number eight really was unstoppable in his pomp, especially when linking up with the formidable Fernando Torres.

Sergio Ramos, Fabio Cannavaro, Pepe and Iker Casillas really had no idea what had hit them when they got the Stevie G treatment.

Although, it was enough to convince Ramos that he wanted Gerrard at Madrid, as he backed Jose Mourinho's move to make a formal bid for the Liverpudlian in 2010.

Ramos was quoted saying: "I think Madrid's admiration of Steven Gerrard is not a secret.

"He is at the point now where he needs to win things.
