Cristiano Ronaldo's return was supposed to be the start of something special at Manchester United.

The Portuguese superstar joined the likes of Raphael Varane and Jadon Sancho in making Old Trafford their home as United looked poised for a fantastic season.

Sadly, despite Ronaldo's best efforts, that just never panned out.

United are now doomed to their worst ever Premier League season having also been knocked out of the Champions League and domestic cups early.

Ronaldo has been electric in front of goal but the apologetic performances from some of his supposedly world-class teammates have left a lot to be desired.

Their disastrous season was capped by a brutal 4-0 humiliation at the hands of Brighton on Saturday, leaving Ronaldo with nothing to do but laugh at the shambles he has somehow become a part of.

So, in the midst of one of the trickiest spells of his life, where has Ronaldo been going to seek counsel? Well, according to the Mirror, straight to the home of Sir Alex Ferguson.

The legendary boss has been a monumental figure in the life of Ronaldo and it seems his door has been open all year long.

According to the report, Sir Alex has even gone to Ronaldo's house on several occasions to discuss his future and just have a general catch-up.

Per the same report, it is believed that Ferguson is eager for Ronaldo to stay at Old Trafford beyond this season to 'protect his legacy'.

Ronaldo has always valued Ferguson's opinion higher than most. It was the Scot, after all, that convinced him to rejoin United last summer.

Whether Ronaldo takes his advice this time around is another kettle of fish, but it is brilliant to see just how close the two remain years after Ferguson stepped back from the dugout.

With the Erik ten Hag era dawning at United next season, it will be very interesting to see whether Ronaldo sticks around to be part of the beginning of the project, or seeks pastures new to see out his days.

If Sir Alex has anything to do with it, he'll be tearing it up at Old Trafford all over again.
