UFC lightweight Dustin Poirier has poked fun at former opponent Justin Gaethje after his submission defeat in the main event of UFC 274.
On Saturday night, Justin Gaethje dared to be great as he went in search of becoming the undisputed 155-pound champion. He threw everything he had at Charles Oliveira but unfortunately, it just wasn’t enough as ‘Do Bronx’ dropped and submitted him in the very first round.
It serves as the second time he’s failed to win the big one after also being choked out by Khabib Nurmagomedov back at UFC 254.
Interestingly enough, Gaethje has had a very similar path to a former foe of his – Dustin Poirier.
‘The Diamond’ was also once the interim champion and also failed to beat both Khabib and Oliveira, with the two submitting him in the process.
The irony of this isn’t lost on Poirier who opted to take a self-deprecating approach when addressing Gaethje after the fight.
Poirier did manage to make it to the third round of both encounters whereas Gaethje was unable to make it past the first and second respectively.
Will we see Poirier vs Gaethje 2?
While Michael Chandler is certainly in the mix when it comes to fighting one of these two men, the idea of Dustin Poirier vs Justin Gaethje 2 is almost too appealing to turn down.
It wouldn’t be the first time they’ve danced in the Octagon, either, after they collided way back in April 2018.
Poirier was on his first major road to the title with Gaethje still fighting the chaotic style that got him into all kinds of trouble against both Michael Johnson and Eddie Alvarez. Poirier won, and he did so after an absolute war.
They both need to get back in the win column if they’re serious about another push for the top of the division and when you take a look at how they’ve evolved, it’s impossible to see this looking exactly the same as their first fight.
In a general sense, it speaks volumes about the depth and entertainment value of lightweight that this is just one of many options that fans would be happy with.
Bantamweight is great, but UFC 274 proved how much gas is left in the tank at 155.
