Newcastle 'in conversation' to bring 'Saint-Maximin upgrade' to St James' Park

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe in Premier League game against Norwich

Newcastle will be in the conversation to sign Watford winger Ismaila Sarr this summer, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

The £26m-rated attacker could leave the Hornets following their relegation to the Championship and the Toon Army are one of several Premier League sides being linked with his services.

What’s the latest news involving Sarr?

Newcastle have been keen on signing Sarr since their takeover was completed in October and while they missed out on his signature in January, the Magpies remain interested ahead of the summer.

According to The Sun, the 24-year-old, who has scored five goals and added two assists for Watford this season, is still a target for Eddie Howe ahead of the window reopening for business next month.

What year did Newcastle United move into St James’ Park?

Sarr has missed much of this season through injury, although he’s continued to prove himself at this level, with only Emmanuel Dennis (10) outscoring him in the Watford squad, despite playing just 22 times in the top-flight.

Therefore, Jones reckons that Newcastle will be in the running for his signature and even said that the Watford forward is better than current Magpies winger Allan Saint-Maximin, who could leave St James’ Park this summer.

What did Jones say about Sarr?

He told GIVEMESPORT: “I do believe that Sarr is an upgrade on Saint-Maximin, and they should be in that market for him.

“We will have to wait and see what his fee levels out at this point, but I think there will be a lot of top teams going for Sarr in the summer, and Newcastle will be in that conversation.”

How has Sarr performed in the Premier League?

The most productive of Sarr’s three seasons in English football came in 2020-2021 when he directly contributed to 23 goals in 39 games as Watford won promotion from the Championship.

However, in his two campaigns as a Premier League player, the Senegal international has shown that he can also perform at the highest level.

In the top-flight, Sarr has scored 10 goals and chipped in with eight assists, meaning he directly has a hand in a goal more than once every three matches.

Of those 10 goals, Sarr has found the net twice against both Liverpool and Manchester United, one of which came in the 4-1 mauling over the Red Devils back in November, proving that he can do it against the very best.
