Newcastle United supporters ‘can expect’ more clarity on the club’s striker shortlist ‘in the next fortnight’, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

The Magpies are expected to bring in several new acquisitions over the summer after becoming the world’s richest football club following their Saudi-backed takeover last year.

What is the latest news involving Newcastle?

Newcastle have been in fabulous form since the turn of the year, with manager Eddie Howe and their five January signings completely transforming their fortunes.

A run of just five defeats in their 17 Premier League fixtures in 2022 has moved the St. James’ Park outfit well clear of the relegation zone and has sparked talk of their next move in the transfer market.

Jones has previously informed GiveMeSport that Newcastle are planning on signing Stade Reims’ Hugo Ekitike and ‘one other’ forward in the next transfer window.

The 19-year-old came close to joining Howe’s revolution in the winter after a £33 million bid was accepted before he ended up staying put following late interest from Borussia Dortmund and Paris Saint-Germain.

However, Ekitike could finally make the switch to the North East of England when the market reopens for business, and he may be joined by another new goalscorer.

What has Jones said about Newcastle?

Jones has now revealed that the Newcastle hierarchy are ‘drawing’ up their list of transfer targets upfront and that the names on that list will become clear in the near future.

He told GMS: “I think in the next fortnight, we can expect to understand their shortlist, if you like, on strikers.

“They're drawing it up at the moment; they've got to the stage of the season where they can go to respective signings now and say, ‘Look, this is where we've got to in the space of four months, five months.’”

Who could Newcastle sign?

According to The Telegaph, Newcastle have given up hope of signing Benfica’s highly-rated star Darwin Nunez as they believe he is only open to joining a side that can offer him Champions League football.

The report states that the Toon Army have instead shifted their focus onto Brentford’s Ivan Toney after an impressive Premier League campaign.

Toney, a former Newcastle player, has registered 14 goals and six assists in 35 appearances for the Bees this season and is believed to have a £30m asking price.

Chris Wood only arrived from Burnley in January, but it seems as though he is already set to be replaced as Newcastle’s chosen attacker to lead the line.
