Manchester City could still enter the race for Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Ruben Neves this summer, according to journalist Dean Jones.

Neves is expected to seek a new challenge when the transfer market opens up again in just a few months’ time following five successful seasons with the Midlands outfit.

What is the latest news involving Neves?

According to The Athletic, there is ‘an acceptance’ within the Wolves hierarchy that Neves may be allowed to leave Molineux ahead of next term if an acceptable offer arrives.

And a recent report in the Daily Mail has claimed that the Portugal international has had a £70 million price tag placed on him after an outstanding 2021/22 campaign.

It’s claimed that Premier League duo Manchester United and Arsenal are long-term admirers of Neves, who has previously been described as "phenomenal", while European giants Juventus and Barcelona are also keen on his services.

The technically gifted maestro has just over two years remaining on his current contract, so Wolves will be in a strong position around the negotiating table when it comes to discussing a potential deal.

However, Neves’ preference is said to be that he remains in the Premier League, providing a boost to the English clubs monitoring his situation.

What has Jones said about Neves?

Neves has previously expressed his desire to return to the Champions League after he became the youngest captain in the competition with Porto back in 2015.

And Jones believes he is ‘perfectly capable’ of playing for any side in Europe and has even claimed he wouldn’t even rule out the prospect of the midfielder joining City.

He told GiveMeSport: “He is perfectly capable of playing at any of the top clubs in the European positions. So, it's just really a case of who's got an available spot in the team that opens up for him to play. To be honest, it could even be Man City, I wouldn't rule that out.”

Do Man City need Neves?

City may have captured Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund, but club captain and back-up holding midfielder Fernandinho is set to leave the Etihad Stadium following the conclusion of this season.

The Brazilian’s exit would leave Rodri as the only natural option at the base of the engine room, meaning there would surely be room for Neves in Pep Guardiola’s plans.

WhoScored also lists passing, through balls, concentration, tackling and ball interceptions amongst the highly-rated star’s key strengths, highlighting his suitability to plug the gap that Fernandinho will leave behind.

It remains to be seen if the Cityzens do enter the race for Neves, but he could be an ideal candidate to come in and bolster Guardiola’s midfield options.
