Benfica striker Darwin Nunez would be an "amazing signing " for Manchester United this summer, says journalist Dean Jones.

The 22-year-old has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford, and Jones thinks his addition would complement Cristiano Ronaldo nicely.

What is the latest news involving Nunez?

According to Portuguese outlet Record, United are firmly in the race to sign Nunez, who has been hailed as a "sensational talent", when the transfer window opens.

In fact, the Red Devils seem to have a very good chance of landing the Uruguayan, with The Athletic claiming last month that the Premier League club are actually one of the frontrunners for his signature.

Regarding how much Nunez could cost, the reliable Fabrizio Romano has stated that Benfica want around €80m (£68m) for their hitman, so acquiring him is not going to be a cheap operation.

Having scored over 30 goals in all competitions this season, though, it is easy to see why the Portuguese outfit are demanding so much.

What has Jones said about Nunez to United?

Jones thinks Nunez would be an amazing addition to Erik ten Hag's squad and believes his capture would send out the right message.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, the transfer insider said: "I think Darwin Nunez would be an amazing signing. It would signal where the club intends to go. They need somebody who's young and hungry.

"You can imagine him and Ronaldo in tandem, whether it was together, whether it was in rotation, whether it was spurring each other on."

Do United need Nunez?

Yes. As Jones has said, United have to bring in a young and hungry striker in the upcoming transfer window. Simply put, it is a position in their squad that desperately needs strengthening.

There are doubts surrounding Anthony Martial's long-term future at the club, with the 26-year-old currently out on loan at Sevilla, while Mason Greenwood remains suspended. As for Edinson Cavani, he is set to leave the Red Devils in the summer when his contract expires.

Ten Hag could also have a problem with Marcus Rashford, who has grown disillusioned with life at Old Trafford this term, so it is clear to see that bringing in a new No.9 has to be a priority for United.

Harry Kane, who is thought to be a target, would probably be the dream given what he has accomplished in the English game, but Tottenham will be reluctant to let their talisman go, so Nunez could indeed be the one for United this summer.
