UFC legend Donald Cerrone has confirmed that he plans on retiring from mixed martial arts after his next two fights.

Throughout the course of his incredible career, Donald Cerrone has achieved some remarkable things. From WEC to UFC and beyond, ‘Cowboy’ has established himself as one of the most entertaining fighters of his era. He’s fought for titles, competed in pay-per-view main events and produced some of the more remarkable knockouts ever seen at 155 or 170 pounds.

Alas, at the age of 39 and with five defeats in his last six fights, it’s no surprise that many are talking about the possibility of Cerrone finally riding off into the sunset.

This past weekend at UFC 274, he was supposed to get back into the Octagon to take on fellow veteran Joe Lauzon - only for a bout of food poisoning to rule him out just hours before the event began.

In a video posted to his Instagram, Cerrone expressed his disappointment at having to withdraw from the Phoenix showdown.

“My heart is broken and torn,” said Cerrone. “I cannot believe I had to make that call. If you know me you know I only pulled out because I had to. Thank you for the UFC and the medical division for helping me as far as we could to try and make that buzzer but we just couldn’t get it.”

“So we’ll meet again. Like I said, Cowboy’s got two more fights left under Zuffa. I want 50 fights then I’m bowing out, I’m out of here, boys. I’ll be back stronger than ever ready to take on the world. Let’s go.”

On his actual post, Cerrone reaffirmed his desire to walk away after his next few bouts.

“This is not the way I wanted this fight to go. 48 fights I’ve never had to pull OUT. Thanks you @ufc and like I just said probably 50 is my number!!!! 2 more fights then I ride off into the sun set”

The record breaker

Cerrone is tied for the most wins in UFC history at 23 alongside Andrei Arlovski and Jim Miller with an astonishing 37 outings to his name. In addition to that, he’s also tied for the most post-fight bonuses with Charles Oliveira at 18.

Like him or hate him, this man is destined for some kind of Hall of Fame consideration.
