Rangers defender James Tavernier could be an option to replace Tyrone Mings as Aston Villa captain, believes former Premier League midfielder Carlton Palmer.

Steven Gerrard has suggested that he may turn to the transfer market to find a new skipper for Villa, and Palmer would not be surprised to see him raid his former club for a player he knows very well.

What has Gerrard said about the Villa captaincy?

Mings is the current club captain at Villa, and Gerrard has said that he is happy with the job that the 29-year-old is doing.

However, at the same time, the Villans manager has admitted that he is weighing up a change and will consider signing a leader in the upcoming transfer window.

"I still won’t rule out the option of someone coming in, who I know, who is also capable of being in the running," Gerrard said last month (via The Guardian) when discussing the Villa captaincy.

"Ty [Mings] is in with a really good shout, I’ve been really happy with him," he later went on to add.

What has Palmer said about the Villa captaincy?

With Gerrard ready to sign someone who is captain material, Palmer thinks Tavernier could be an option.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, the ex-Leeds United and Southampton player said: "It could be an option. I'm not too sure how he would do in the Premier League, but it could be an option.

"The Scottish league, with all due respect, is not the same as the Premier League, but it's evident that he doesn't fancy Tyrone Mings."

Would Tavernier make a good Villa captain?

He could, and for many reasons, with one being that he has the armband at his current club.

The £30,000-a-week Englishman was, of course, also captain when Gerrard was still at Rangers, leading the Gers to their first Scottish Premiership title in 10 years last season.

If the Liverpool legend really is planning to go after someone he knows, then Tavernier, who he has described as a "powerhouse" in the past, surely has to be the first name that comes to his mind.

The only problem is, how often is Tavernier going to be on the pitch? Villa already have a very capable right-back in Matty Cash, who only recently signed a contract extension with the club.

Whatever the case, while Gerrard does not seem to be completely against the idea of Mings retaining the armband, it looks like change could be coming, with a new leader like Tavernier potentially arriving.
