The ‘greatest of all-time’ conversation is one we’ll continue to have for as long as mixed martial arts is still thriving across the globe. Every single day there are new, exciting stars making a name for themselves in a variety of promotions, all hoping to become the next big thing.
However, in the present day, there are a select few names who are considered to be genuine contenders in the GOAT debate.
Jon Jones and Anderson Silva are often mentioned with Fedor Emelianenko serving as the heavyweight representative of the group.
Alongside those figures you’ve got Georges St-Pierre and Khabib Nurmagomedov. The two both had incredible runs in the UFC at 170 and 155 pounds respectively, and as a result of their success, many have wondered what would happen if they ever fought one another.
As per GSP in a recent podcast appearance, Dana White genuinely wanted to make it happen.
“What happened now — because Khabib is retired and I’m retired — so now, the UFC… Dana called me and he’s like, ‘Oh, now would you be interested to fight Khabib?’ He asked me. He called me.
“But I thought it was strange because I never wanted to do it. And now, because he called me for that reason, I was like… I didn’t want to do it, but I told Dana, just to see what happens because I was curious. You know it’s always a chess game when the promoter calls you.
“I didn’t say no, I said, ‘OK. Let me think about it.’ The way Dana talked to me, it was like Khabib already accepted. But it wasn’t true. It was just fishing to make the fight happen.
“They knew now that we were both retired, so now, for them, it was an opportunity to make a big-money fight.”
Where are they now?
St-Pierre is enjoying retirement with appearances across the globe, acting work and a Sensei role in Karate Combat to keep him busy.
Khabib, meanwhile, is the main man at Eagle FC with his other main commitment being his fantastic coaching work.
