Pep Guardiola: Patrice Evra slams Manchester City boss in scathing attack

Patrice Evra has torn into Pep Guardiola in a scathing rant

Former Manchester United star Patrice Evra has criticised Pep Guardiola for his overbearing and complicated management style.

The Frenchman, who has recently turned his hand to punditry, didn’t hold back when giving his opinion on several key areas regarding Manchester City.

Speaking on Amazon Prime video, he laid into Guardiola and accused the City team of lacking any real leaders on the pitch.

Evra on Guardiola’s management style

“I have a lot of respect for Guardiola but I’m glad I never had him as a coach, because he takes away your responsibilities.” Evra said, per Goal.

“I was talking to Clarence [Seedorf], you have the impression that he is playing on the Playstation. He tells you everything you need to do.

“I remember that [Thierry] Henry, for example, when he was at Barcelona, Guardiola told him to stay wide, but Henry came inside to do one-two with [Lionel] Messi, he scored and after the first half Guardiola put him on the bench, he took him out, just because he didn’t respect his directives.”

We’re not quite sure what has got Evra so riled up when it comes to Guardiola, given the success the Spaniard has had in the game. But anyone would think City were in a relegation battle after reading Evra’s comments.

And the bombardment didn’t stop there…

Evra on Guardiola hating personality and a lack of leaders

Following City’s five-minute capitulation at the hands of Real Madrid last week, many have questioned the possibility that Guardiola overthinks tactically.

Evra agreed with that proposal, hailing a “lack of tactical flexibility” and an “inability to adapt when things aren’t going well.”

However, he also suggested that there may be more to it than simple tactical flaws.

Manchester City needs leaders, but Guardiola doesn’t want leaders,” Evra continued.

“He doesn’t want personality. He’s the leader. That’s why when they’re in trouble they don’t want to.

“They don’t have anyone on the pitch to help them. He chooses his teams like that; he can’t train people with personality. He did it at Barcelona, but he builds his team to control everyone.”

Lineker hits back

Evra’s heavy criticism has been generating quite the stir on social media and it seems Gary Lineker was tempted to weigh in with a response.

The Match of the Day presenter has long been a fan of Guardiola’s brand of football and simply tweeted: “utter nonsense.”

The former Barcelona man then continued with his show of support, after one of his pro-Evra followers responded in agreement with the Frenchman, saying: “Spot on. Ask Ibra.”

Lineker fired back: “Ask Messi, Iniesta, Xavi, Puyol, De Bruyne, Muller, Pique, Lahm.”
