Chelsea: Didier Drogba says Sam Kerr’s goal was better than his

Sam Kerr was the star of the show as Chelsea won their third successive Women’s Super League title at the weekend.

The Australian was named player of the match as she scored two stunning goals during her side’s 4-2 victory against Manchester United.

Her second goal was particularly outrageous – with her back to goal, Kerr controlled the ball on her chest, turned, and volleyed it into the back of the net.

Chelsea fans were quick to point out the similarities between a goal scored by Didier Drogba. A legend at the club, the striker hit the back of the net 104 times in 254 appearances for The Blues.

His goal against Everton in 2006 is one of his most famous. Like Kerr, Drogba controlled the ball on his chest, before turning to smash it into the net. Unlike Kerr, the Ivorian let the ball bounce before hitting it on the half-volley.

Kerr shared a video comparing the two goals on her Instagram, and received a reply from Drogba himself.

The Chelsea icon shared the video with the caption: “Harder than mine, Sam Kerr 👀 What a season!!! Congrats CHAMP 💙”.

Kerr is well on her way to becoming a Chelsea legend. Since joining the club in 2020, the 28-year-old has scored 46 goals in 42 appearances in the Women’s Super League.

She scored 20 goals this season, securing the Golden Boot for the second campaign in a row.

“Everyone thinks I was surprised at scoring that goal but I told Erin Cuthbert, ‘I’m going to score an unbelievable goal tomorrow, I’m going to chest it down and volley the ball’,” Kerr said after the victory against Manchester United.

“I visualise, but I actually think today it both worked in my favour and not in my favour because I visualised too much in the first half and it wasn’t going my way and I felt tired, I felt nervous. And in the second half we just cleaned it straight.”
