West Ham target Ollie Watkins is a "great player" and has different strengths to Michail Antonio, claims Daily Star journalist Paul Brown.

The Aston Villa striker has been linked with a move to the London Stadium as David Moyes looks to bring in a new forward.

What is the latest news involving Watkins?

According to The Guardian, Watkins is a key target for West Ham this summer, though getting him out of Villa Park is unlikely to come at a cheap price.

The same report states that Villa are likely to demand at least £50m for their first-choice No.9, so the Hammers are going to have to splash the cash if they really want him.

Bringing in a new centre-forward is expected to be a priority for Moyes in the upcoming transfer window.

Currently, Antonio is the only natural option the Scotsman has in that position, showing how badly West Ham need to strengthen there.

What has Brown said about Watkins to West Ham?

Brown has hailed Watkins' finishing ability and can see the England international playing alongside Antonio and rotating with him.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, the Daily Star reporter said: "I think he's a great player, and he'd give them something they don't really have because he's got pace, but he's also quite a tidy penalty box finisher.

"He has different strengths to Antonio, basically. I think they'd work in tandem, and they'd also work if you're using one or the other every other game."

Would Watkins be a good signing for West Ham?

Yes. The Hammers need a new No.9 and Watkins is probably one of the best outside of the top six.

He has scored 10 league goals this season and managed to bag 14 the campaign prior, which was his first taste of top-flight football.

"Ollie Watkins for me is a top, top player," former England and Liverpool striker Michael Owen said back in March. "He came from Brentford and he scored a lot of goals there. But I do like him. I know that Steven Gerrard really likes him as well."

Ultimately, it is fair to say that Watkins is quite good at his job. You can see why West Ham want him, though some supporters of the east London club would probably take any centre-forward right now given Moyes' lack of options.

Unless Villa somehow manage to acquire an upgrade on the former Brentford man, though, it would be a surprise if they let him go this summer.
