Having looked dead certain to win the league by a handsome margin, Rovers’ form spiralled alarmingly out of control, managing just one win in seven as they approached the final day.
In fact, so dramatic was their downturn in form, they arrived on the last day of the season needing Exeter City to slip up in order for them to steal in at the last and clinch glory.
Fortunately, that is exactly what happened. Exeter lost 1-0 at Port Vale leaving striker Josh Marsch the opportunity to claim glory for himself as he clinched a late equaliser to send Rovers top.
It made for a frightfully nervy afternoon for fans but there will have been one fan in particular who might have struggled to bring himself to even watch it all.
That is because the unnamed fan had the small matter of a possible £308,000 windfall riding on the game.

At the beginning of the season, the punter lodged an ambitious six-fold accumulator predicting the winners of various leagues in the UK.
With Fulham, Wigan, Kilmarnock, Cove and Kelty Hearts all delivering on their end of the bargain, it was down to Forest Green to cap the dream.
William Hill spokesperson, Tony Kenny, said: “Many of our customers chance their arm with big-priced accumulators on who will win a selection of football leagues from around the world, but few of them come off.

“However, that wasn’t the case on Saturday as a remarkable ante-post six-fold landed with one punter correctly predicting that Kilmarnock, Cove, Kelty Hearts, Fulham, Wigan and Forest Green would all emerge victorious in their respective leagues.
“The punter staked just £20 on the bet back in August and after a late Forest Green equaliser, they are waking up over £300k richer.”
Just imagine how he must’ve felt watching Forest lose game after game in the run-in.
Thankfully it all worked out in the end and we can only wish him well with winnings – what a bet!
