Max Verstappen says he's relishing chasing Charles Leclerc in Drivers' standings

Red Bull driver Max Verstappen says that he is relishing chasing down Charles Leclerc in the Drivers’ standings at the moment, with the gap down to 19 points.

The Dutchman and the Ferrari ace have been going hammer and tongs for the duration of this campaign so far, with Leclerc winning two Grands Prix and Verstappen winning the other three.

Certainly, it currently appears as though the title is between the pair of them, though obviously their respective team-mates Sergio Perez and Carlos Sainz will want to try and get involved in the action if they can.

However, it’s currently Leclerc and Verstappen leading the way in the Drivers’ standings, with Max cutting down Charles’ lead to 19 points in recent rounds, as he took another victory at the Miami Grand Prix on Sunday.

And, with the chase firmly on for P1 in the table, the Dutchman has said that he is much preferring doing the hunting than being the hunted in 2022, as he was for the final stages of the 2021 season where Mercedes and Lewis Hamilton appeared to have an edge on pace:

“I like the position I’m in at the moment, knowing that the car is quick.

“And for example, end of last year, of course, I was the one who was being hunted. And that was actually not a great position because I knew that we didn’t have the pace anymore.

“I knew it was going to be very tricky to the end. So yeah, just depends a bit of how competitive you are as well.”

Certainly, Max and the RB18 look to be the strongest package on the track at the moment and he’ll be aiming to maintain his form at the Spanish Grand Prix, which takes place a little over a week from now.

He’s in incredible form, and that 19 point gap that Leclerc has could well disappear quickly unless Ferrari can respond.
