Leeds 0-3 Chelsea: Fan 'forgot they were losing' and tried to keep the ball

Leeds United are now the big favourites to be the third and final team relegated to the Championship this season.

A few weeks back, Jesse Marsch’s side looked as if they were on the verge of securing Premier League safety.

They picked up back-to-back wins over Norwich City and Wolverhampton Wanderers in March, before thrashing Watford 3-0 away from home at the start of the April.

But three losses and a draw since that day at Vicarage Road have left Leeds fighting a seemingly losing battle to avoid relegation.

Everton and Burnley’s upturns in form of late haven’t helped matters, but Leeds have also been their own worst enemy.

Luke Ayling was shown a red card for a reckless tackle on Gabriel Martinelli in the 2-1 defeat to Arsenal, while Daniel James was also given his marching orders for a hideous challenge on Mateo Kovacic in Wednesday’s 3-0 loss to Chelsea at Elland Road.

They really haven’t helped themselves and it seems even the Leeds fans have been guilty of hampering the team during matches.

In the crushing defeat to Chelsea, one supporter decided to try and keep the ball after it went off the pitch for a throw-in.

Footage of the rather bizarre incident in the stands is currently doing the rounds on social media and it couldn’t have captured Raphinha’s furious reaction any better.

What were they thinking?! Marcos Alonso could do nothing but smile as the clock continued to run while his Chelsea side were winning.

After a little bit of arguing, Raphinha eventually convinced the supporter to hand over the ball in order to get play restarted.

Safe to say it wasn’t the fan’s finest hour watching the team in action.

Leeds will now switch focus to their most important weekend of the 2021/22 Premier League season.

The Whites welcome Brighton to Elland Road on Sunday at 2pm, a game you feel they simply have to win to stand a chance of remaining in the division.

And a Burnley loss to Tottenham Hotspur in the day’s early kick-off would provide even more motivation.
