Celtic could revisit 'successful market' to bring £2.5m star to Parkhead

Ange Postecoglou celebrates winning the Scottish Premiership title with Celtic

Celtic may be ‘hoping’ to have ‘more success’ in the French market as they continue to pursue a deal for Alexandre Mendy, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The Hoops have been heavily linked with a move for the SM Caen striker recently as manager Ange Postecoglou looks to make further additions to his first-team squad.

What is the latest news involving Mendy?

According to French outlet L’Equipe (via the Daily Record), an initial offer of €3 million (£2.5m) has reportedly been put on the table by the Celtic hierarchy for Mendy, who has been described as “very strong”.

The report states that several sides are keeping close tabs on the 28-year-old’s situation, though, after impressing throughout the current campaign.

It’s claimed that Celtic’s opening bid has been turned down, but that Caen would be willing to negotiate a sale “in the event of a higher offer”, providing hope that an agreement can be reached.

And the level of interest in Mendy is understandable as he has registered 16 goals and one assist in 32 Ligue 2 appearances so far this season.

The 6 foot 2 ace’s goals have been unable to fire Caen into the play-off places, and as a result, he now appears destined to seek a new challenge over the summer months.

What has O’Rourke said about Mendy?

In recent years, Celtic have had success with the French market, bringing in Odsonne Edouard and Christopher Jullien from Paris Saint-Germain and Toulouse, respectively.

And O’Rourke believes the newly crowned Scottish Premiership champions may try their luck once again for the ‘talented’ Mendy.

He told GiveMeSport: “It’s been a successful market for Celtic in the past, them raiding the French market, and maybe they’ll be hoping they could have more success if they do decide to pursue a move for Mendy as well.

“He looks like a talented player, and Postecoglou is planning ahead and looking to strengthen his squad with their Champions League football in mind next season.”

Do Celtic need another striker?

Postecoglou has already brought in Kyogo Furuhashi, Georgios Giakoumakis and Daizen Maeda to strengthen his strike force, although the latter prefers to play on the left-wing.

Do you know this obscure player Celtic signed in the January transfer window?

Meanwhile, the Greek-Australian tactician clearly doesn’t trust Albian Ajeti, who has only started six games in all competitions for Celtic throughout 2021/22.

Mendy’s arrival at Parkhead would surely be warmly welcomed, therefore, adding another option to Postcoglou’s ranks ahead of a busy campaign containing Champions League football.
