Tottenham may move ahead of Manchester United in the race to sign Villarreal's Pau Torres if they qualify for the Champions League, according to journalist Pete O'Rourke.

The 6 foot 3 defender is attracting plenty of interest after a stellar campaign in Spain.

What's the latest news involving Torres?

Torres has flourished at Villarreal this term, helping them reach the last four of the Champions League, before they were knocked out of the competition by Liverpool.

His performances have been monitored by potential suitors, and the Manchester Evening News have reported that United are set to revive their interest in Torres, after also tracking him last summer.

Meanwhile, Tottenham are also keen on adding the Torres to their squad to bolster their three-man defence, and Football Insider have claimed they are optimistic that they could sign him for around £45m this summer.

What has O'Rourke said about Torres?

United can no longer finish inside the top four, while Tottenham still have a chance of playing in next season's Champions League, especially after their recent north London derby win over Arsenal.

O'Rourke thinks this could give Spurs the edge, while he has also pointed out that offering Torres the chance to live in London may also be a major selling point.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, O'Rourke said: “If they get Champions League football, it’s going to give them an advantage over Manchester United in the pursuit of Pau Torres, who obviously impressed in the Champions League this season for Villarreal.

“Tottenham is an attractive proposition for all the top players to work under a manager like Conte. Living in London is a big factor as well.”

Would Pau Torres be the perfect centre-back signing for Tottenham?

It is no surprise that Tottenham have identified Torres as a potential target for this summer.

Conte has played Eric Dier at the centre of his back three whenever he has been fit this season, while Spurs also appear to have unearthed a gem in the shape of Cristian Romero.

There is a feeling that the left centre-back position can be strengthened, though, despite Ben Davies doing an admirable job in this role over the past six months.

Dubbed as a "natural talent", Torres is left-footed and graceful on the ball, which could nicely complement Romero's aggressiveness, and Dier's rock-solid presence at the back.

If Tottenham can beat off competition from the likes of United, Torres could be an exceptional signing for the north London club.

And as O'Rourke says, the lure of Conte could prove to be an added appeal for the Spaniard too.
