Newcastle: £40k-a-week star now has 'question mark' over St James' Park future

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe shouting instructions

Jamaal Lascelles‘ future at Newcastle United is in doubt, believes Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie.

The Magpies captain has been in and out of Eddie Howe’s starting XI, and Downie has suggested that he could leave in the summer.

What is the latest news involving Lascelles?

The i reported earlier this month that Newcastle could be tempted to listen to offers for Lascelles in the upcoming transfer window.

The 28-year-old has been a regular at St James’ Park down the years, making 25 appearances for the Tyneside club this season.

However, he is no longer an automatic starter in central defence, with Howe often going with Dan Burn and Fabian Schar in Newcastle’s recent fixtures, like the 1-0 defeat against Liverpool.

And with the Premier League outfit able to buy another centre-back soon when the transfer window opens, Lascelles could be about to find himself in even more trouble.

What has Downie said about Lascelles’ Newcastle future?

Downie thinks Lascelles’ situation is one to watch this summer, telling GIVEMESPORT that there is now a question mark over his future at St James’ Park.

Speaking to GMS, the Sky Sports journalist said: “I have to say, I think there’s a question mark over his long-term future at the club, and I think that will be a really interesting one in the summer as to whether he stays or goes.

“He’s been there for a long time, he loves the club and he loves the city. I think he’s a good captain; the way he has reacted to being left out the team has been exemplary.”

Should Newcastle sell Lascelles this summer?

Now being backed by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, Newcastle have the means to significantly improve their backline, and it seems like that is what they are going to do this summer if they are planning to listen to offers for Lascelles.

Still, the £40,000-a-week Englishman has his use and maybe should not be cast off so easily. He is experienced at this level having made 150 Premier League appearances, while he also brings leadership after captaining the team for all these years.

What year were Newcastle United founded?

As a squad player, Lascelles could be a great individual to have around. From his perspective, though, the former Nottingham Forest man may want a bigger role than that, while Newcastle may have to sell some members of their roster to avoid breaching Financial Fair Play rules.

Whatever happens, Lascelles has undoubtedly been a good servant to Newcastle following his arrival from Forest as a youngster.
