Mass Effect 4 is set to be the latest in the massively successful Bioware series, as it follows on from the critically adored trilogy of games on the Xbox 360 and PS3 but is Commander Shepard going to be in the game?
It is not yet clear when exactly the game is going to be released but there has been confirmation that the game is in the early stages of development.
It is likely to release on the next generation of consoles, meaning the PS5 and the Xbox Series X/S, along with PC.
There is understandable excitement surrounding the potential continuation of the epic story of Mass Effect and there had been speculation that the game could even see the return of Commander Shepard.
As per Gamespot, Bioware have now responded to those rumours, and it might well be bad news for fans of the character.
Is Commander Shepard going to be in Mass Effect 4?
The short answer here appears to be no.
As per the aforementioned Gamespot report, there was a poster version of the teaser art for the next Mass Effect game that appeared on the Bioware Gear Store.
That included a description that specifically mentioned Shepard.
It read: “Shepard’s final quest may have ended the threat of the Reapers but at great cost including Earth itself. While Shepard and the survivors are left to pick up the pieces, fans are left wondering what’s next”
That naturally kicked off discussions suggesting that Shepard is coming back into the universe of Mass Effect but the rumours don’t appear to be heading anywhere.

Bioware developer Mike Gamble posted a statement on Twitter that seemed to indicate that Shepard isn’t going to be in the game.
He wrote: “Yeah, that was a mistake. Fixed.”
He followed up by saying: “The original thing was written by the people who run the store and aren’t familiar with the game.”
Now, of course, Shepard isn’t mentioned so all hope is not lost, but it does seem as though the character will not be appearing as a main playable character in the next game.
That doesn’t rule out a cameo, though…
