One Sunderland fan will travel to Wembley for the League One play-off final via Menorca because travelling to England’s capital by train is far more expensive.

Sunderland are aiming to return to the Championship for the first time since 2018.

In order to escape League One they’ll need to beat Wycombe, who finished sixth in the table, one point behind the Black Cats.

Thousands of fiercely loyal Sunderland fans have already made plans for the big day on May 21.

But one frugal supporter has worked out that it’s genuinely cheaper for him to fly via one of Spain’s Balearic Islands than taking the train down south.

As a result, that’s exactly how he’ll be travelling to the game.

The fan in question - @JellyJelly88 on Twitter - tweeted a screenshot of his confirmation email, adding: "It’s actually happening, I’m flying to Menorca to get to Wembley, an absolute bargain at £23 and a cheeky day in the sun, I’ll see you all in Trafalgar Square, if a little burnt."

It’s cheaper to fly to Wembley via Menorca than travelling down by train. How mad’s that?

And £23 as well. You really can’t argue with that.

How much more expensive would it have been to travel by train?

According to Trainline, per JOE, Sunderland fans will have to splash out as much as £344 for a return ticket.

Even with a railcard, then, Sunderland’s supporters are looking at parting with an eye-watering amount of money in order to use the train.

Train ticket prices Sunderland to London

It’s just absurd, isn’t it?

Hopefully all those fans who part with their hard-earned cash to travel to see their team are rewarded with a fantastic day out at Wembley.

As for @JamesJelly88, we hope he enjoys the in-flight entertainment on his flying visit to London.
