Chelsea retained the Women’s FA Cup thanks to a 3-2 victory over Man City at Wembley. 

Sam Kerr opened the scoring for Emma Hayes’ side, before Lauren Hemp equalised before half-time. 

Erin Cuthbert’s stunning second-half strike put the Blues back in front, only for Hayley Raso to equalise with just two minutes of normal time remaining. 

But as has become customary in matches of late, it was Kerr who found the winner for Chelsea in extra-time. The Australian’s deflected shot wrong footed Ellie Roebuck and sent Hayes into raptures. 

Chelsea fans were jubilant as the final whistle blew, with the match played in front of a record Women’s FA Cup crowd of 49,094. 

Sam Kerr the hero again 

Kerr has been the hero for Chelsea multiple times recently.

Last weekend, the 28-year-old scored twice against Man United to help the Blues win a third consecutive Women’s Super League Title.

And the striker rose to the big occasion once again today. 

While her second goal was no doubt fortunate, Chelsea will not mind and neither will Kerr. 

The forward finishes the season with 29 goals in all competitions –– not bad for someone who was labelled a flop after her first half-season in England two years ago. 

Erin Cuthbert’s wonder strike

Kerr may have scored a double, but it was Erin Cuthbert’s wonder strike that was the pick of the goals. 

Cuthbert has been an integral player for Hayes’ side all season and showed her class again today with a thunderbolt from outside the area. 

It was a goal that will go down in FA Cup history and one that led to the Scot deservedly being named Player of the Match.

Hayes adds to her trophy cabinet

Hayes has now won 12 trophies with Chelsea, including five WSL titles, four FA Cups, two League Cups and the 2017 WSL Spring Series. 

While Chelsea were made to work hard for this particular victory, the win completed another fine domestic double for the Blues and capped off another remarkable season. 

Man City’s run comes to an end

Gareth Taylor’s side hadn’t lost a game since February ahead of this fixture and pushed Chelsea all the way. 

The Citizens beat Chelsea in the Continental Cup Final earlier this season, but they could not repeat the feat this time around. 

Nonetheless, given their torrid start to the season, City can be proud of their achievements, and will no doubt come back stronger next year.

Another record crowd

There have been plenty of record crowds at women’s football matches of late. Barcelona packed the Nou Camp twice, while Bristol City attracted a record Women’s Championship attendance to Ashton Gate. 

This year’s Women’s FA Cup final was the latest to make history as 49,094 watched on at Wembley.

It is yet another sign that women’s football is going from strength to strength, and that women’s matches at big stadiums should become more commonplace.
