Newcastle: 121-game Rafa Benitez signing 'will leave' St James' Park

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe in the Premier League against Manchester City

Dwight Gayle will leave Newcastle in the summer, according to Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie.

The 32-year-old only signed a new contract last year, but he’s hardly had a look in under Eddie Howe and looks set to end his six-year stay with the Toon Army.

What’s the latest news involving Gayle?

When Gayle made the switch to St James’ Park back in 2016 and then scored 23 goals to send the Magpies back to the Premier League, he was Newcastle’s main man.

But as a top-flight player, the ex-Crystal Palace frontman has never quite cut the mustard, and across the last three seasons, he’s become a bit-part player.

Do you know this obscure player Newcastle signed in the January transfer window?

Gayle has been directly involved in 45 goals in 121 games during his Newcastle career, but he’s played less than 1,000 minutes in the league since the beginning of the 2019-2020 season.

And this campaign, he’s made just a handful of cameo appearances, with his only start coming all the way back in August in the Carabao Cup against Burnley.

Gayle still has two years remaining on the deal he signed last summer, but Downie reckons that he’s now surplus to requirements under Howe.

What did Downie say about Gayle?

He told GIVEMESPORT: “Dwight Gayle will go in the summer, and then if he wants three strikers, you’d have Callum Wilson, Chris Wood and then another coming in and then maybe even a fourth who can play off one of the wings, but I think he’d be an option, a good option to have off the bench.”

Has anyone been linked with Gayle?

Having failed to prove himself as a Premier League striker, a Championship move would appear very much on the cards for Gayle.

Back in January, the Telegraph reported that West Brom, where he enjoyed a fruitful spell in 2018-2019, and Nottingham Forest were both linked with loan moves, with the striker looking for more regular game-time.

Gayle has found the net 26 times in the Premier League, but his three standout seasons with Posh, West Brom and Newcastle have all come in the second-tier, which might suggest that dropping down a league could be his best chance of establishing himself as a regular once again.
