Tottenham Hotspur target Joakim Maehle would be a ‘perfect asset’ for manager Antonio Conte, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The 24-year-old has been linked with a move to north London in recent weeks after impressing for Atalanta and could prove to be a valuable asset should he make the switch.

What is the latest news involving Maehle?

According to the Daily Mail, Tottenham’s hierarchy are ‘looking at’ the possibility of signing Maehle over the summer to solve their left wing-back problems.

The Denmark international reached the semi-finals of Euro 2020 with his nation, impressing throughout the tournament, and is widely considered to be amongst the best attacking defenders in the world.

Since Conte’s arrival at Hotspur Way back in November, neither Sergio Reguilon nor Ryan Sessegnon have been able to hold down a regular starting berth on the left flank.

Matt Doherty even deputised on his weaker side due to the inconsistency and injury problems of Reguilon and Sessegnon and a long-term solution could be brought in ahead of next season.

And a recent report in The Athletic revealed the main focus for Spurs this summer will be to sign a left-sided centre-back, but the ‘next priority’ will be two wing-backs, one for each flank.

Italian outlet Il Giorno have claimed that Spurs will have to splash out €18 million (£15m) to prise Maehle away from the Gewiss Stadium and that the positive relations between the two clubs could be an important factor.

What has Jones said about Maehle?

In an exclusive interview with GiveMeSport, he said: “He’d be a perfect asset for Conte to have in his armoury.

“It’s one of the most important positions in a Conte setup, and I think it makes a lot of sense that in this market, at a time when they need quite a lot but haven't got millions and millions to go and do it, they would look at somebody like Maehle.

“Somebody that could tick two boxes instead of just one.”

Would Maehle be a good signing?

Maehle, who is comfortable on either flank, only joined Atalanta from KRC Genk in January 2021, but he’s already established himself amongst the top performers in his position.

As per FBref, the 6 foot 1 ace has ranked in the 91st percentile for progressive passes received, 89th for non-penalty expected goals and 87th for touches in the attacking penalty area when compared to players in his position over the last year.

It’s clear, therefore, that Maehle could be a valuable addition to Conte’s ongoing revolution at Tottenham and the versatile star could offer a solution to their wing-back woes.
