Wolverhampton Wanderers head coach Bruno Lage is 'under pressure' and it would not come as a surprise if he is sacked by the Molineux hierarchy, according to talkSPORT reporter Alex Crook.

Lage was appointed as Wolves' boss last summer, but there are question marks as to whether he will be handed a second campaign at the helm.

What's the latest news involving Lage?

Lage signed a three-year contract when he agreed to move into the Wolves hot seat, with his deal not due to expire until the summer of 2024.

He was drafted in to replace Nuno Espirito Santo, who left Molineux by mutual agreement at the climax of last season.

Lage had previously gained experience in the English game by working as Carlos Carvalhal's assistant manager at Sheffield Wednesday and Swansea City, while his most recent top job had come at Benfica.

However, it seems the 46-year-old has started to lose the dressing room as, according to Football Insider, Wolves stars have protested against Lage's plans to implement a new system.

The report suggests Lage, who won the Portuguese title and Supertaca Candido de Oliveira during his time in the Benfica dugout, wants to start deploying a back four instead of continuing to implement the long-standing three-man defence.

What has Alex Crook said about Lage?

Crook has hinted that Lage's long-term future at Wolves could be in doubt thanks to an underwhelming end to the season.

The talkSPORT journalist does not necessarily feel that the Portuguese is in line to get the axe, but he insists it would not come as a shock if Lage is shown the door.

When asked whether Lage's job is on the line, Crook told GIVEMESPORT: "The performances have been poor.

"I wouldn't go as far as to say that he might get sacked, but I think he is under pressure and it wouldn't surprise me if there was a change."

Why is Lage's Wolves future in doubt?

Lage has racked up 17 wins from his first 42 matches in charge of Wolves, but inconsistent form saw them fall out of contention for European qualification.

Last weekend's stalemate with already-relegated Norwich City meant the West Midlands outfit went into the final match of the season knowing that they could not finish in the Premier League's top seven.

A defeat to Liverpool today means Lage's charges have finished the campaign without a win in their last seven outings.
