Manchester United target Darwin Nunez would be a ‘game-changing signing’ for the club, according to talkSPORT reporter Alex Crook.

The Red Devils are one of several sides believed to be contemplating making a move for the 22-year-old, who has enjoyed an outstanding campaign for Benfica.

What is the latest news involving Nunez?

Nunez is expected to be one of the hottest properties on the market during the summer transfer window after registering 34 goals and four assists in 41 appearances across all competitions throughout 2021/22.

And last month, The Athletic’s David Ornstein revealed that United, Chelsea and Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain were leading the race for the Uruguay international’s signature.

It was claimed at the time that Benfica were set to demand €70 million (£58.2m) for their prized asset and were hoping to conclude a deal early on in the window.

Ornstein has now provided an update on Nunez’s situation, revealing the Eagles are actually willing to accept a bid in the region of €60m (£50.6m) after identifying Stuttgart’s Sasa Kalajdzic as their preferred replacement.

Only time will tell if Nunez can be convinced to join United, though, as they are set for a transitional year under incoming manager Erik ten Hag without any Champions League football to offer.

What has Crook said about Nunez?

Crook believes that Nunez to Old Trafford is a ‘non-starter’ as he wants to play in Europe’s elite cup competition and has recently heard that PSG are in pole position for his signature.

He told GiveMeSport: “Nunez wants to play in the Champions League. So that, I would imagine, is a non-starter.

“I think he would be a game-changing signing in terms of a young, hungry, proven striker, but I think he'll end up going to a Champions League club. I think he'll probably end up at Paris Saint-Germain, I was hearing yesterday.”

Who else could Man Utd sign?

Italian outlet Sports Mediaset have recently claimed that United are at the front of the queue for Napoli’s Victor Osimhen, with club president Aurelio De Laurentiis failing to rule out an exit in the summer.

Newcastle are also said to be monitoring the Nigeria international, who is believed to have a €100m (£85m) price tag after racking up 18 goals and laying on six assists in 31 outings this season.

Ten Hag is expected to make a new striker one of his priorities upon his arrival in Manchester as Edinson Cavani, Anthony Martial and Mason Greenwood are all unlikely to be at his disposal.
