Newcastle: £60m star ‘could’ arrive at St. James’ Park this summer

Newcastle United head coach Eddie Howe applauds the supporters

Newcastle United have a realistic chance of signing Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin over the summer, according to talkSPORT reporter Alex Crook.

The 25-year-old has been linked with a number of clubs in recent weeks as the Toffees’ issues both on and off the pitch refuse to go away anytime soon.

What is the latest news involving Calvert-Lewin?

Everton recorded a loss of £121 million last term, taking their total deficit for the past three seasons to almost £373m.

The Goodison Park outfit’s financial woes have been increased following the sanctioning of oligarch Alisher Usmanov, who was due to sign a naming rights deal for the club’s ambitious new Bramley-Moore Dock Stadium.

And according to The Sun, Everton’s hierarchy have accepted that they will have to cash-in on either Calvert-Lewin or Richarlison in order to balance the books.

Football Insider have provided a recent update on the England international’s situation, claiming Newcastle have held ‘preliminary’ with him, although they’re set to face stiff competition for his signature.

It’s claimed that Calvert-Lewin’s preference would be to join Arsenal, meaning Eddie Howe may face a tricky task in luring him to St. James’ Park.

What has Crook said about Calvert-Lewin?

Crook has revealed he can ‘see the attraction’ of signing for Newcastle if he was Calvert-Lewin as the Magpies are more ‘upwardly mobile’ than Everton at this moment in time.

He told GiveMeSport: “Yeah, I can see the attraction because I think they are a more upwardly mobile club than Everton at this stage.

“Obviously, it’s a World Cup year as well, so he needs to be playing at the best level he can. So, I could see that happening.”

Would Calvert-Lewin be a good signing?

Calvert-Lewin has endured a difficult campaign, with injuries and a lack of form restricting him to just four goals and one assist in 15 Premier League appearances.

Nevertheless, he has previously showcased his ability as an elite finisher at the highest level,  registering 36 goals and six assists in 80 appearances across all competitions between 2019/20 and 2020/21.

Alan Shearer celebrating scoring

Premier League and Newcastle United all-time top goalscorer Alan Shearer is a true legend of the game, but when did he leave their club?

And putting the ball in the back of the opposition’s net is something Newcastle have struggled with all season.

Callum Wilson is the club’s top scorer with a meagre total of just six strikes, highlighting why Howe is believed to have Calvert-Lewin, who has a £60m price tag, on his wish list.
