Aaron Ramsey: Rangers man was gutted after penalty miss in Europa League final

Aaron Ramsey was heartbroken after missing decisive penalty in Europa League final v Frankfurt

Rangers were beaten by Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League final on Wednesday evening.

The Scottish giants looked as if they would end their 50-year wait for a European title when Joe Aribo’s 57th minute goal gave them the advantage.

However, they couldn’t hold on as Rafael Santos Borré restored parity with 20 minutes remaining.

The game went all the way penalties and it was the German side that emerged victorious.

Aaron Ramsey was subbed on in the 117th minute with the intention of taking a penalty.

But it didn’t go according to plan for the Welshman as he was the only player to miss a penalty in the shootout.

Ramsey took Rangers’ third spot-kick and his effort was poor. He tried to smash his effort down the middle but it was saved by Kevin Trapp.

A few spot-kicks later, Borré smashed his effort into the top corner and Frankfurt’s win was confirmed.

Ramsey was absolutely gutted after the final whistle. Kemar Roofe and Calvin Bassey both took the time to console him.

John Lundstram gave his support to Ramsey after the game. He told BT Sport, per the Metro: “It is a lottery, anyone could have missed.

“It could have been any of us on the pitch and unfortunately its him. But he is absolutely heartbroken.”

Ramsey joined Rangers on loan from Juventus in January but his spell has not gone as he would have hoped.

The Welshman has struggled for form and fitness since making the move to Scotland.

He has failed to complete the full 90 minutes in his 13 appearances for the club.

Rangers will play their final game of the 2021/22 season when they face Hearts in the Scottish Cup final.

It could well be Ramsey’s last in a blue shirt. According to Get Italian Football News, there is no talk of Rangers signing him on a permanent deal and he will return to Juventus in the summer.
