The Red Devils have long been linked with a move for the 27-year-old and could finally secure the Lazio midfielder following the arrival of incoming manager Erik ten Hag.
What is the latest news involving Milinkovic Savic?
According to FootballTransfers, United’s hierarchy have identified Milinkovic-Savic as an alternative to priority target Frenkie de Jong if they are unable to prise him away from Barcelona.
It’s claimed that a fee of €70 million (£59.3m) would be enough to secure the Serbia international’s services, but the Old Trafford outfit aren’t the only interested party.
European giants Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus are also expected to join the race for Milinkovic-Savic’s signatures, although the Old Lady are prioritising bringing Pogba back to the club.
Lazio boss Maurizio Sarri recently revealed that he is convinced the 6 foot 3 ace ‘will not remain in Italy’ if he does leave the Stadio Olimpico this summer, potentially providing United a boost in their pursuit.
However, Milinkovic-Savic’s agent Mateja Kezman has rubbished reports that his client wants to go to United as ‘fake news’.
What has Clancy said about Milinkovic-Savic?
With Pogba set to depart Old Trafford on a free transfer, United are expected to be in the market for a new engine room operator and Clancy can see many similarities between Milinkovic-Savic and the World Cup winner.
Sadio Mane set for Liverpool exit?! Find out more on The Football Terrace…
He told GiveMeSport: “He’s very similar to Pogba in that he can do everything that Pogba does. Maybe he’s not as good as Pogba when both are at their best, so for that reason, I’m not sure if Manchester United is a club he should go to.
“Obviously, everything’s changing at United now with Ten Hag coming in, so who knows what’s going to happen there. But in terms of ability, Milinkovic-Savic is more than good enough to play for United.”
Would Milinkovic-Savic be a good signing?
Sky Sports reporter Anton Toloui has previously dubbed Milinkovic-Savic a “complete midfielder”, and it’s hard to argue with that assessment.
The box-to-box dynamo has enjoyed a stellar campaign, registering 11 goals and 12 assists in 46 appearances across all competitions, and his underlying numbers are equally as impressive.
As per FBref, Milinkovic-Savic has ranked in the 99th percentile for progressive passes received, 99th for touches in the attacking penalty area, and 97th for total shots amongst players in his position.
It’s clear that Milinkovic-Savic could add some extra quality and goal threat to United’s midfield, potentially proving to be a natural successor to the departing Pogba.
