The second Grand Slam of the year – the French Open – is just around the corner.

The world’s best tennis players have descended on Paris for Roland-Garros, ready to battle for 2000 ranking points and £1.87 million in prize money.

The women’s tournament will be as fiercely-contested as ever, with GiveMeSport Women selecting five players who could go all the way.

Iga Świątek

It’s impossible to look past Świątek as the favourite to win the French Open. The 20-year-old has enjoyed a remarkable 2022, earning five consecutive WTA titles and securing a 28-match winning streak.

She now heads to Roland-Garros on the hunt for her second Grand Slam title. If the Polish star does triumph, she will become the first player to win more than five titles in a single season since Serena Williams clinched seven in 2014.

Świątek is set to play a qualifier in the opening round of the tournament.

Ons Jabeur

Jabeur has thrived on clay so far, racking up the most match wins on the surface this season with 17. She has also reached three finals at clay tournaments, obtaining her first WTA 1000 title at the Madrid Open.

The world number seven is yet to win a Grand Slam, but this could all change at the French Open. If anyone stops Świątek from triumphing at Roland-Garros, it will be Jabeur.

The Tunisian starts her campaign against Magda Linette of Poland.

Bianca Andreescu

Andreescu has been showing signs of steady improvement since returning to tennis after a four month break.

The 2019 US Open champion had struggled with injury and mental health issues, but she now seems to be enjoying her time on the court again.

Andreescu reached the round of 16 at the Stuttgart Open and Madrid Open, before progressing to the quarter-final at the Italian Open, battling hard in her 7-6, 6-0 loss against Świątek.

Tamara Zidanšek of Slovenia awaits Andreescu in the first round.

Jessica Pegula

Pegula has been one of the most consistent performers at WTA 1000 events over the past two years, reaching the final of the Madrid Open earlier this month.

The American has also been enjoying more success at Grand Slams, progressing to the quarter-finals of the Australian Open in January.

Pegula has an outside chance of winning the French Open, but a decent performance could see her rise into the world top 10. Her first opponent will be Wang Qiang of China.

Barbora Krejčíková

The defending champion has returned from injury to compete at the French Open this year. She overcame Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in last year’s final to earn her first Grand Slam title, and now she’s back for more.

Krejčíková has not played since an elbow injury flared up before Indian Wells, however, so she may not have time to find her form. Fans should have a better idea of how the Czech star will fare after her first round match against Diane Parry of France.
