Tottenham: £15m target could be 'perfect for Conte' at Hotspur Way

Tottenham manager Antonio Conte in the Premier League against Arsenal

Tottenham Hotspur target Joakim Maehle ‘could be the perfect wing-back’ for manager Antonio Conte, according to Italian football expert Conor Clancy.

Maehle is believed to be on the radar of the Spurs hierarchy with the summer transfer window just around the corner and could arrive at Hotspur Way imminently.

What is the latest news involving Maehle?

The Denmark international become a household name when he played a pivotal part in his nation reaching the semi-finals of a memorable Euro 2020 tournament.

However, Maehle has struggled to hold down a regular starting berth for his club in the current campaign, featuring from the off in just 15 Serie A fixtures.

The 25-year-old’s limited game time has seen him linked with a move away from the Gewiss Stadium, and Tottenham have emerged as a potential suitor.

According to the Daily Mail, the north London outfit are tracking Maehle as they look to solve their issues at left-wing back, although the Scandinavian is comfortable on either flank.

It’s claimed that Tottenham’s Italian director of football Fabio Paratici already successfully raided Serie A for Dejan Kulusevski and Rodrigo Bentancur in January, and he is set to return there for the defender.

What has Clancy said about Maehle?

Clancy is a big admirer of Maehle’s and revealed that he believes he is ‘one of the best wing-backs in Italy’ and could be a perfect fit for Conte’s preferred tactical setup.

He told GiveMeSport: “I think he should be starting every week for Atalanta because I think he’s that good.

“I think he’s one of the best wing-backs in Italy when he plays, but he’s not been playing, and I think if he went and joined Tottenham, he could be the perfect wing-back for Conte and in England as well.”

Should Spurs sign Maehle?

Italian outlet Il Giorno have claimed that Spurs will have to splash out €18 million (£15m) to bring Maehle to the club just 12 months after they also signed Cristian Romero and Pierluigi Gollini from Atalanta.

And that figure could prove to be a bargain for a player Kasper Schmeichel described as a ‘machine’ after Denmark’s 4-1 win over Russia at last summer’s Euros.

Mounir El Hamdaoui - Tottenham

Do you know this obscure player Tottenham signed in the January transfer window?

Compared to fellow wing-backs over the last year, the 6 foot 1 ace has ranked in the 91st percentile for progressive passes received, 89th for non-penalty expected goals and 86th for touches in the attacking penalty area, as per FBref.

Adding him to Conte’s ranks could prove to be an extremely astute acquisition by Tottenham’s hierarchy, therefore, adding some much-needed quality out wide.
