Sports presenter and radio host Laura Woods brutally shot down a caller who claimed Arsenal have a ‘small club mentality’ during a debate on talkSPORT. Woods, who is a known Gunners fan, was taking calls live on the talkSPORT breakfast show, the morning after Arsenal were beaten 2-0 by Newcastle United. The result meant Arsenal failed to leapfrog rivals Tottenham and are now two points behind their North London rivals, with one game of the season left to play. Understandably, Spurs fans were quick to gloat about being in pole position to secure Champions League football and one fan called in to troll Woods and fellow co-presenter Darren Bent. 

Woods and Bent accused of being biased

The caller in question stressed that both Bent and Woods weren’t being harsh enough on Arsenal and claimed that the Gunners’ recent collapse has been the worst in Premier League history. 

“You two are so biased it’s unbelievable,” the Spurs fan said. “The fact Arsenal didn’t have any European football this season, the fact that you spent a lot of money in the summer, the fact that you were actually fourth a matter of weeks ago… this has got to be the biggest collapse of all-time.”

In response, Woods admitted to being somewhat biased, but refuted the idea that Arsenal missing out on the Champions League is that bad. 

“It’s not the biggest collapse of all time, Nick, and I don’t mind you calling me biased, because I am an Arsenal fan,” Woods stressed.

“I will say as well, at one point of the season which was months ago, we were saying if Arsenal get top four it’s an overachievement, I stand by exactly what I said then, 100 percent.”

Woods’ savage response

The Spurs fan then accused Arsenal of having a small club mentality, however, Woods was having none of it.

“I think Nick, coming from a Spurs fan, you’d know exactly what a small club mentality is all about,” Woods responded. 

Woods continued and proceeded to deliver the knockout blow, stating: “Let’s come back and talk about small club mentalities when you manage to win something, Nick. Lovely to have your call though!”

Is top four over for Arsenal now? 

Whilst the result against Newcastle was a hammer blow for Arsenal’s top four chances, it’s not over just yet. 

The Gunners face Everton at home on the final day of the season and need to win to have any hope of creeping above Tottenham. 

Spurs, meanwhile, face Norwich away and need only a point to secure Champions League football, by virtue of their far superior goal difference. 

The Canaries are already relegated and Dean Smith will already be thinking ahead to next season in the Championship. However, Arsenal will still maintain hope that they can pull off a historic win.
