Manchester United will make a 'statement signing' if they succeed in persuading Benfica striker Darwin Nunez to head to Old Trafford, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

It has been a disappointing season for the Red Devils, with them missing out on Champions League qualification, but it seems they have already turned their attentions towards bringing in reinforcements.

What's the latest news involving Nunez?

Manchester United will enter a new era after tomorrow's final day trip to Crystal Palace, with Erik ten Hag's reign as manager officially getting underway.

Among his first signings could be Nunez, with The Athletic revealing the Red Devils - along with Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain - are the frontrunners for the Uruguayan's services.

The report suggests Benfica are open to selling the 22-year-old despite his contract not being due to expire until the summer of 2025.

Manchester United could reportedly strike a deal if they are willing to stump up a fee worth in the region of £51million.

Benfica's valuation has seemingly dropped considering they rejected a £60million bid from West Ham United a matter of months ago.

What has Dean Jones said about Nunez?

Jones believes ten Hag and Manchester United would show they mean business by beating other big-name suitors to Nunez's signature.

The transfer insider feels the striker would be a coup due to the amount of other clubs also hoping to get a deal over the line.

Jones told GIVEMESPORT: "They definitely have to improve their recruitment strategy and they have to make sure that there are no more mistakes.

"Someone like Darwin Nunez would definitely be a statement signing because there are so many clubs interested in him."

How has Nunez performed this season?

The Portuguese season may be over, but it proved to be a campaign to remember for nine-cap Uruguay international Nunez.

He found the back of the net 34 times and registered another four assists in 41 appearances.

That means Nunez scored 10 goals more than Cristiano Ronaldo, Manchester United's top goalscorer this term.

Although he was the most prolific marksman in the Portuguese top flight, Benfica still finished 17 points adrift of champions Porto.

Nunez also shone in the Champions League, getting his name on the scoresheet on six occasions.

As a result, he has scored 68 goals during the early stages of his club career, so Nunez would undoubtedly be a potent signing by incoming Red Devils chief ten Hag.
