Premier League final day: Liverpool's chances of winning the title predicted

Jurgen Klopp

There’s a small chance that come next Saturday evening, Liverpool will have achieved something close to footballing perfection.

With just two games remaining in their 2021/22 season, Jurgen Klopp’s side are in with a shot at winning a quadruple.

Liverpool have already secured the League Cup and FA Cup, while a date with Real Madrid in the Champions League final awaits them.

And on Sunday, the Reds will look to win the Premier League for just the second time in their history.

However, they will require an enormous amount of help from Aston Villa.

Steven Gerrard’s side travel to current table-toppers Manchester City on the final day and they need to get at least a draw for Liverpool to stand a chance of winning the title.

Of course, Klopp’s talented outfit still need to beat Wolverhampton Wanderers on home soil, which is certainly not a formality.

To be completely honest, it’s hard to envisage a world in which Liverpool hold the Premier League trophy aloft at Anfield on Sunday.

But according to a stats-based prediction model, the odds aren’t as slim as we initially believed.

In fact, Liverpool have been given a 19.5% chance of winning the title, which seems pretty generous to us.

The model, created by the folks over at Opta, has given the percentage chance each team has of finishing in a specific position.

So, here are the key takeaways.

Manchester United have a 78.5% chance of finishing ahead of West Ham United and securing Europa League football over the Europa Conference League.

That seems slightly optimistic given that the Red Devils will likely need to get a positive result away at Crystal Palace.

Arsenal fans have pretty much no hope going into the final day, although Opta’s model believes there’s still a 15.7% chance that the team will finish fourth at the expense of Tottenham Hotspur.

Leeds United supporters won’t be happy one bit, as they’ve been handed a daunting 84.2% chance of relegation to the Championship.

Prepare yourselves folks, it could be a Premier League final day that we’ll be talking about in decades to come.
