However, remarkably, Liverpool never actually leapfrogged City into first place as Wolverhampton Wanderers held them at 1-1 until the closing moments when Mohamed Salah and Andrew Robertson scored.
And that simply wasn't enough for the Merseysiders to wrestle the title back from City's grasp because their north-west rivals just happened to produce a stunning comeback at the Etihad.
In scenes not too dissimilar to that of the iconic Sergio Aguero goal, albeit on not quite such a dramatic scale, there were absolute limbs at City as they scored three goals in just five minutes.
Ilkay Gundogan found the net either side of a Rodri strike to spark scenes of delirium in sky blue, meaning that only a late goal from Villa could possibly see the English footballing crown end up elsewhere.

So, when the final whistle ended any hope of Gerrard saving Liverpool in the dying moments, all the emotion flooded out for Guardiola as he breathed in his fourth Premier League title on the sidelines.
During the first few seconds, the 51-year-old could be seen wildly celebrating as if he'd scored a goal, but quickly the gravity of the situation took hold as tears of happiness formed in his eyes.

There's no denying that it's not been a perfect year for the Citizens and losing out on the Premier League crown to Liverpool would have marked Guardiola's first season without a trophy since 2016/17.
But alas, Guardiola has ensured that his team stayed frighteningly consistent during the run-in with an astonishing 23 wins from their final 28 games always keeping Jurgen Klopp's side at arm's length.
So, sure, Liverpool fans and neutral supporters alike might be bemoaning a fourth league triumph in five years for City, but everyone can surely agree that Guardiola has put his heart and soul into this victory.
