Leeds United will persuade Elland Road favourite Kalvin Phillips to 'sign a new contract' after securing their Premier League safety on the final day of the season, according to Mirror journalist David Anderson.

The Whites finished three points clear of the drop zone and staved off relegation to the Championship, boosting their chances of keeping Phillips at the club.

What's the latest news involving Phillips?

Phillips' £38,000-per-week contract is not due to expire until the summer of 2024 and Leeds had put talks over a new deal on hold.

It was revealed earlier this month that the Whites had decided against holding discussions over fresh terms until after their top flight status had been confirmed.

Uncertainty over his long-term future, along with whether his current employers would remain in the Premier League, resulted in Aston Villa and Newcastle United leading the chase for Phillips' signature.

It is understood that Villa are willing to part with £60million in order to tempt the central midfielder away from his boyhood club, while they could also offer a contract worth £10million-per-year.

West Ham United - who failed with a £50million bid during the January transfer window - remain interested in the 26-year-old, along with Manchester United.

What has David Anderson said about Phillips?

Anderson believes Phillips will remain on Leeds' books and commit his long-term future to the club by penning a new deal at Thorp Arch after staving off relegation.

The journalist feels Phillips, along with Raphinha, would have left the Whites due to release clauses being activated if they had dropped out of the Premier League.

Anderson told GIVEMESPORT: "Now that Leeds have survived, I think he will stay and sign a new contract.

"If they had gone down, he would have left and I think Raphinha, who has got the escape clause in his contract, would definitely be gone as well."

Would keeping Phillips come as a huge boost?

Jesse Marsch was appointed as Leeds' head coach in February and Phillips' departure would be among the last things he wants to see.

The 19-cap England international will have an eye on the upcoming World Cup and, with that in mind, he is sure to be wanting to impress Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate ahead of the tournament.

Phillips has made 234 Leeds appearances since coming through the ranks at Elland Road and keeping him on board would be a major boost ahead of Marsch's first full campaign in Yorkshire.
