Southampton have 'unbelievable' 6 foot 2 star on St Mary's shortlist

Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl points the way

Southampton head coach Ralph Hasenhuttl has added Manchester City youngster Gavin Bazunu to his list of St Mary’s transfer targets, according to The Sun journalist Tom Barclay.

Saints finished the campaign five points clear of the Premier League’s relegation zone and it appears Hasenhuttl has already set his sights on welcoming reinforcements into his squad.

What’s the latest news involving Bazunu?

There are question marks over Fraser Forster’s Southampton future, with him entering the final weeks of his £72,000-per-week contract.

Tottenham Hotspur have ear-marked the goalkeeper as a potential signing, heightening expectations for him to leave St Mary’s.

With that being the case, it is understood that Bazunu has been added to Saints’ transfer shortlist ahead of the summer window opening for business.

It comes with Hasenhuttl planning a raid on newly-crowned Premier League champions Manchester City as he looks to improve his options.

Bazunu has just returned to the Etihad Stadium after spending the season on loan with Southampton’s arch-rivals Portsmouth.

What has Tom Barclay said about Bazunu?

Barclay understands Bazunu is on Southampton’s radar and believes a move to the south coast could suit all parties.

The journalist feels Hasenhuttl will be looking for a youthful goalkeeping option if Forster moves on, meaning the 20-year-old Bazunu would fit the bill.

Barclay told GIVEMESPORT: “He is someone they’re looking at. Maybe that one would make sense because if Forster were to leave, I think they would be looking for a younger goalkeeper to provide competition for McCarthy. I wouldn’t say back-up because, as we’ve seen over time at Southampton, he’s mixed and matched it.

“Maybe that would make sense, but he is on the list rather than being on the verge of coming through the door.”

Why is Bazunu of interest to Southampton?

Bazunu has just enjoyed an impressive season on the south coast, with him keeping 17 clean sheets in 46 Portsmouth appearances.

The 6 ft 2 emerging talent even drew praise from Pompey chief Danny Cowley, who described one of his saves as ‘unbelievable’.

While he may be in the early stages of his career, Bazunu has already earned 10 international caps for the Republic of Ireland.

He previously frustrated one of the Premier League’s leading stars while representing his homeland as he saved a penalty from Manchester United and Portugal goal-machine Cristiano Ronaldo last year, so Bazunu has already demonstrated that he is capable of excelling on the big stage.
