Liverpool fell short of the Premier League title by just a single point this season, but Jurgen Klopp will determined to go again with an improved Reds squad in 2022/23. Dean Jones provides GIVEMESPORT with a must-read guide to Liverpool's summer transfer window.

Where do Liverpool want to strengthen?

Primarily in midfield but we have seen in recent years that Liverpool are willing to make astute signings in any area of the field if they see good value in a player with huge potential.

Who could Liverpool sign this summer?

Fabio Carvalho from Fulham has been tied up for a while now and is going to bring a different dynamic to the squad. He is young and raw but has made an unbelievable breakthrough at Craven Cottage over the past year and has complete belief in his ability.

At Fulham he was given freedom to float in the hole behind a front three most of the time - but Liverpool don’t really use such a system. He is either going to have to adapt his game slightly or Liverpool will need to begin to look into a different system that accommodates him as he grows.

On top of that they have been linked with young midfielders including Birmingham City’s Jobe Bellingham and Aberdeen’s Calvin Ramsay.

There have been very few genuine links to big-name stars.

Liverpool's dream signing this summer?

Jude Bellingham. There are very few weaknesses in the Liverpool squad but with two guys aged 31 in Jordan Henderson and Thiago in the middle of the park, as well as regular outings for 36-year-old James Milner, it makes sense that a CM is where Liverpool look for a big signing.

The man they truly would love is 6 ft 2 Aurelien Tchouameni. The 22-year-old has built himself quite the reputation at AS Monaco but is closing in on a move to Real Madrid so the Reds will have to consider where else they can find someone of his position with equal quality.

The truth is they will struggle to find it - but Bellingham, 18, would be ideal.

They have wanted him for a while and the fact he’s at Klopp’s old club Borussia Dortmund should help them when the time comes to leave.

The information right now is that Bellingham is not available and even if he were, he’s extremely expensive - Transfermarkt value him at £67.5m.

But the whole point of a dream signing is that you manage to capture someone who appears out of reach. So Bellingham is that man.

Who's leaving Anfield?

Divock Origi, James Milner, Loris Karius and Adrian have expiring contracts and Klopp will generally look to maintain the bulk of his squad.

Roberto Firmino has been edged out of the attack and Barcelona, AC Milan and Borussia Dortmund have been touted as potential landing spots if the 30-year-old forward wants to remain in Europe.

There has been fresh speculation over Sadio Mane’s future since Robert Lewandowski admitted he does not know if he will remain at Bayern Munich for next season. The Bundesliga champions could try their luck for Mane, 30. Mohamed Salah has still not signed a new contract yet rumours around a departure have gone quiet.

Meanwhile, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain could leave if a tempting offer arrives and the club have been in talks for Nathaniel Phillips to extend his stay with Bournemouth. There is uncertainty around Joe Gomez, while Nico Williams might be allowed back to Fulham.

Liverpool's biggest challenge this summer?

Continuing to improve this team. When you have spent the entire season competing for every trophy available, it’s difficult to argue there is a weakness in Liverpool’s set-up. The key for Klopp is to make sure there is always back-up to the main stars and we have seen a recruitment strategy put in place - see the situations with Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz - whereby the current star XI are being replaced before they have even left.
