Boxing sensation Canelo Alvarez has confirmed he will still fight Gennady Golovkin despite his recent loss to Dmitry Bivol.

Just a matter of weeks ago, Canelo Alvarez fell to his second loss in professional boxing as he was beaten via unanimous decision by Dmitry Bivol. While Canelo didn’t lose a whole lot from the defeat as a result of his ‘dare to be great’ mentality, it definitely felt strange to see him come out on the wrong side of a fight for the first time in almost a decade.

The Mexican star was overwhelmed and overmatched yet the majority of fans chose to focus on his performance as opposed to everything Bivol was doing to neutralise him.

Either way, the result now stands on his record, with the attention shifting to this September and his proposed showdown with Gennady Golovkin.

The pair had been scheduled to face off in a trilogy bout but the Bivol loss threw those plans up in the air, presenting the possibility of an immediate rematch with the Russian instead.

Now, in a press conference on Monday, Canelo has reaffirmed his desire to battle Golovkin one more time.

“Surely yes [he’ll fight Golovkin again].

“We already had that contract, that deal, so we have to continue what we started.

“And I think they are the two most important fights in boxing – the fight with Golovkin and the rematch with Bivol because unfortunately we lost, but that doesn’t mean that I’m not going to try again.

“The important thing here is perseverance and we are going to do it again…

“What is certain is that we will return in September and these days, today, tomorrow, the day after, we are going to announce the fight, only we have to wait a little.”

Sealing the deal

Canelo noted that he still wants to fight Golovkin, Eddie Hearn admitted he’d like to see that before the Bivol rematch, and the world wants to know whether or not GGG can actually get the job done over Canelo - as he’s threatened to do on two previous occasions.

A lot of folks thought he won their first fight but unless he gets his hand raised, Canelo has the edge.

Can he keep it that way?
