Newcastle United could have their work cut out trying to sign Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin this summer, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

Calvert-Lewin has had a disappointing season at Goodison Park, but is still linked with multiple clubs after previously impressing for the Toffees.

What's the latest news involving Calvert-Lewin?

Calvert-Lewin only scored five goals this term as he battled with a number of injury setbacks, and the 25-year-old opened up about his mental health struggles on Monday.

However, he did pop up to score a vital goal in the penultimate game of the season against Crystal Palace to ensure that Everton will remain in the top-flight for another year, proving that he can still step up in big moments for his team.

This perhaps explains why he is an in-demand forward heading into the summer transfer window. Football Insider has claimed that Newcastle want to sign Calvert-Lewin and have held talks with him, but the England international would prefer a move to Arsenal, at this stage. Everton are believed to value Calvert-Lewin at around £60m.

What has Jones said about Calvert-Lewin?

Newcastle's owners, backed by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF), are the richest in world football, but Arsenal are further ahead of them in their journey right now, having finished six places and 20 points clear of the Magpies in the table.

With this in mind, Jones has hinted that the Gunners could hold the edge in the race to sign Calvert-Lewin, but still thinks Newcastle may consider stepping up their interest in the £72,000-per-week Premier League star.

When asked about Newcastle's chances of bringing in Calvert-Lewin, Jones told GIVEMESPORT: “We’ll have to see whether it’s realistic because he’s been linked to other clubs like Arsenal, who are probably more likely to be in that top-six conversation. And then Newcastle, no matter how ambitious they are, it’s still a big step to actually get there. But certainly, it’s one to consider.”

Will Calvert-Lewin definitely leave Everton this summer?

Heading into the final weeks of the season, Jones admitted that it was extremely likely that Calvert-Lewin would leave Everton, alongside teammate Richarlison, this summer.

The Merseyside club have some well-documented financial issues, and could need to raise funds, so offloading the striker may be a smart move on their part.

However, Everton have now stayed in the Premier League, and Calvert-Lewin may want to prove the doubters wrong by remaining loyal to the club and firing them up the table next year, before perhaps departing in 2023.

Therefore, it would not be a complete surprise to see him stick around at Goodison Park for another 12 months.

If he is tempted by a move away, though, Newcastle could be waiting in the wings to offer him a lucrative deal to come to St James' Park.
