Real Madrid has established itself as one of the greatest teams that have won the UEFA Champions League trophy, but which other teams have appeared in the most finals? here's a list.

Participating in the Champions League is a goal that most teams set for themselves at the start of every season.

Playing in this sensational competition requires an elite mentality accompanied by luck as football supporters have already witnessed it all.

Throughout the years we have seen teams go on fantastic runs, only to lose it at the end. Whether it's a penalty shootout, a last-minute winner, or getting destroyed by four or more goals in the final.

While Los Blancos and Liverpool battled it out in yet another final over the weekend, we have compiled a list of the top 10 teams that appeared in the most Champions League finals.

Manchester United (5 finals)

The English giants have already played in five Champions League finals, winning it three times in 1969, 1999, and 2008. The 99 final would go down as one of the greatest finals in the history of the competition as a start-studded United team came from a goal down to beat Bayern Munich 2-1 at the Camp Nou stadium in Barcelona.

Inter Milan (5 finals)

In addition to Manchester United, I Nerazzurri have also appeared in five Champions League finals, giving them the distinction of being one of Italy's most decorated teams.

According to the official UEFA website, Inter has won the competition three times with their most famous victory coming in 2010 against Bayern Munich.

Ajax (6 finals)

During the 70s, the newly crowned Dutch champions won three consecutive European Championships and reached six finals.

The last time they competed in a final, they lost to Juventus on penalties following a 4-2 loss in 1996.

S.L. Benfica (7 finals)

Benfica has to rank as one of the unluckiest teams in the history of the European competition, having lost it five times. The Portuguese giants have only won the competition twice, in 1961 and 1962.

Barcelona (8 times)

The Catalan giants have appeared in eight European finals lifting the trophy on five occasions with their most famous win in the 2009 competition against Sir Alex Ferguson's Manchester United which included Cristiano Ronaldo.

Juventus (9 times)

In addition to winning European glory in 1985 and 1996, the Italian giants have the poorest record in European finals. This makes Juventus the only team in Europe to have lost seven final games.

Liverpool (10 times)

Liverpool has been the most successful team in England on the European stage. The red half of Merseyside played in their 10th Champions League final over the weekend, however, they lost 1-0 to Real Madrid in Paris.

They won the competition in 1977,1978,1981,1984,2005 and 2019.

Bayern Munich (11 times)

Since the competition started, Bayern Munich has appeared at 11 finals making them the most successful team from Germany to participate. They have won the trophy six times and lost the final five times.

AC Milan (11 times)

AC Milan has also appeared at 11 finals making them one of the most successful teams in Italy and 2nd best team to have played in this competition. However, they have not won the Champions League since 2007.

Real Madrid (17 times)

The Spanish club is the most successful team in the history of the competition after they appeared in their 17th Champions League final on Saturday and won it for the 14th time. The last time they came second best in a Champions League final was in 1981, so it has been about 39 years since they have tasted defeat in a final.
